Women’s financial independence has been a topic on the rise of popularity. And yet, media should definitely be writing more about this issue.

finances and saving

Why should media be writing more about women’s financial independence?

It’s been a long way. No, not just a long, but painful, embarrassing, dehumanizing road that women had to take in order to get a grip on the social status they have nowadays. And yet, it’s not enough.

Can we say that nowadays women are financially independent?

This will be the trickiest and most controversial question you’ll be asked today because the answer simply doesn’t exist.

Perhaps, it will be reasonable to address the traditional media outlets which are supposed to provide the audience with the most relevant and important information, broaden the outlook of the readers, and keep their minds sharp but in reality, we don’t see many of those articles.

The more a certain topic gets media exposure, the more considerable it seems to the audience. So it’s just natural that if the issue with the women’s financial independence isn’t perceived as newsworthy by various media outlets, the society won’t develop a modern perception of the issue.

If you want to earn your own money and have a stable income, you need to be a professional in a certain sphere.

How do you become one? You get the higher education (it’s optional but it still is a traditional effective way). This is the issue that girls have been having a problem with throughout the whole history.

From the point of view of a modern person, the fact that women weren’t allowed to enrol at universities seems absolutely ridiculous.

In fact, the number of male and female students became equal in the USA only in the year of 1980. It wasn’t until 2013 when the first woman in Saudi Arabia got her Ph.D. And there are still countries out there who give only limited access to education for girls.

Media is the tool which is supposed to raise awareness and we have many reasons to back up this idea.

In fact, you can write your own article stating your opinion on the topic. If you have a chance to contribute to the movement of spreading the word about girls’ rights, then what can possibly stop you from doing it? If you don’t think your writing skills are good enough for this mission, don’t worry. You can always ask for help a reputable website which will be glad to help you out. All you need to do is to ask: “Write my essay for me” and be proud of yourself.

How come it still exists in the 21st century?

It’s the pay gap we’re talking about.

It’s a harmful virus which is making many modern industries sick. Society was supposed to develop the immunity to fight it a long time ago but, unfortunately, here we are, at the point when women get only 75% of the wages that a male employee is being paid doing the same job.

Actually, that number isn’t very steady, you can see different numeral data in different countries and even in different cities of one country. Some experts claim that it’s already 80% and it has a solid tendency of growing.

Perhaps, if we see more articles about this major problem in all possible spheres, we will cut the difference to 99%. However, we must admit that this topic does pop up in the media from time to time but the journalists mainly focus on the sphere of show-business and celebrities who were dragged into scandals about the pay gap in Hollywood.

So technically, if journalists write about this issue more actively, they can potentially earn more.

You’re not allowed to learn how to read

books

Does this phrase seem outrageous to you? What would you do if somebody would address you with such a prohibition?

You’d probably think that this is some kind of a joke. But unfortunately, this is a situation that many girls and women have to face on a daily basis in some countries.

Mostly, these are the states of the third world, nevertheless, it’s not the reason to take the right to education from those women. Governments of such countries as Liberia, Mali, Guinea, Somalia, Niger and many others don’t have opportunities and money to provide all the young girls even with the basic education.

And if women are under-educated, they are powerless, they become dependent on men, and they can’t even dream about the equality in treatment and wages.

Countries situated in sub-Saharan Africa, for example, teach girls only for two years. They often don’t even know how to read or to write.

If we go there and meet 200 women on the way, only one of them will have a university degree and it will be our luck to meet this lady. In the 21st century, we still have a heart-breaking rating of the countries with the highest level of illiteracy and two-thirds of this illiterate population are women.

The fight isn’t over in the developed countries as well

This issue is also not a popular topic in the newspapers and magazines though it definitely should be.

Society has been talking about the physical abuse in the families for quite some time now. And thanks to the media exposure of this topic, the awareness was raised and more women started speaking out.

But what about financial abuse? Why can’t we find well-written and relevant articles about this global problem?

It’s sometimes also being referred to as economic abuse and it represents the situation when one of the partners has a full or almost total control over the access of the partner to financial resources.

No, women aren’t the only victims of this abuse but still, they form the majority of such social group.

Women mostly take a maternity leave, become housewives, stay-at-home parents and they get stuck in a situation when they can’t be financially independent anymore.

And yet again, the attention of media towards this problem will serve as great leverage in this fight for equal rights.
